The way John says, “You could.” Always with the utmost confidence and faith in Sherlock. And that one last smile that John is able to bring out of Sherlock before they fall.
That laugh and pause are so brilliant… With those two words spoken by John… So familiar to Sherlock in their sincerity. He can’t help but laugh. John’s sincerity, his confident faith in him. All those times he has to exclaim how fantastic, brilliant, amazing he thinks Sherlock is. How much John believes in him as much as it baffles Sherlock that someone could care so much about him for who he is… And here Sherlock is trying to convince John he is a fake, a lie, and it’s same old, same old John. Yet Sherlock can’t help but laugh the most perfectly loving, slightly exasperated laugh, where the brilliant genius loses himself from his current intentions. And then that long pause as he just watches John, knowing this may be the last time they will speak to each other in a very, very long time, quite possibly forever. Then is dragged back into the reality of the situation and there is a weighted finality to his tone and fear. Because he loves John and and won’t let anything happen to him no matter the cost.
